The First Strike Recorded in America

During the building of the Meetinghouse in 1773 the workers, who had been promised plenty of rum, had fastened all the timbers together and erected the frame when they discovered that the rum barrel had run empty. The workers then refused to proceed until more rum could be brought to the site.
Refusing to let the work be delayed, the master builder, Nathaniel Batchelder drove his team of horses to Newburyport, Massachusetts; the nearest port where the rum barrel could be filled.
Mr. Batchelder returned the following day with full barrels of rum for the workmen and work resumed.
