Motor Vehicle Registration

  • Motor Vehicle fees are based on the Year, Gross Vehicle Weight, and List Price of the vehicle when it was new
  • Vehicles are registered every year in the first owner’s month of birth.  If you lease a vehicle it is done with the company’s name.
  • We offer mail in registrations.  You will receive a notice by mail with a list of all your vehicles and the cost to re-register.  Please check these over carefully and list any changes.
  • We accept cash, check or debit card. (see announcement below).  If paying by check you will need two checks.  One made payable to THE TOWN OF SANDOWN and one made payable to THE STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE – MV.

 NEW SERVICES ANNOUNCED

The Town Clerk's Office is pleased to announce that we now offer two new services for your convenience....debit cards and online registration.

Debit cards - for each transaction performed there will be a $2.50 transaction fee.  In the case of vehicle registrations, the $2.50 transaction fee will apply to BOTH state and town amounts.

On-line Registrations - WWW.EGOV.NH.GOV - You will be allowed to renew registration(s) (you will need to have your old registration) five days prior to the month it expires and up until the fifth to the last business day of that month (i.e., if your renewal month is March, renewals can begin on February 23rd and continue through March 26th)  A charge of $5.00 will be incurred for EACH registration renewed.  On-line registrations are accepted for vehicles weighing less than 8,000 lbs. and those who do not have any "delinquent" conditions (ie., suspensions, parking tickets, etc.) or with no other modifications (i.e., address change, etc).  In addition, the registrant must be 18 years of age prior to the renewal month.  Upon successful completion of the on-line registration renewal, the state will print and mail the registration(s) and decals.

NEW PURCHASE:

When you purchase a vehicle out of state or from a private sale in state that is not more than 15 years old you MUST obtain the title, even if you have a lien holder on the vehicle.  You will bring the title to the Town Clerk’s office and we will process the application for the new title listing the lien holder.  When the title is made it will be sent directly to the lien holder.  Whoever the vehicle was sold to MUST come to the Town Clerks office to apply for the new title.  If there are two owners both people MUST be present.

If you purchase a vehicle in state from a dealership they should process the title application for you.  You would then bring the blue application for title to the Town Clerk’s Office.

If the vehicle is over 15 years old you will need a bill of sale and either the previous owners registration or a copy of the title.  If you do not have one of these items you will need to have a blue VIN verification form filled out.

TRANSFERRING PLATES

When you purchase a vehicle you may transfer your plates onto your new vehicle.  We need the old registration in order for you to receive the credit towards registering your new vehicle.  The new vehicle must have the same first name as the old vehicle in order to transfer the plates.  If you are transferring plates from a leased vehicle you can still receive the credit but you must finish the transaction at a DMV.  Always start with the town you live in.

NEW PLATES

If you do not have plates you wish to transfer we do have plates available at our office.  We offer Passenger plates, (regular number plates), vanity plates, and conservations plates.  There is an extra $40.00 fee per year for vanity plates and a $ 30.00 per year fee for conservation plates.

VETERANS PLATES

You need to provide us with your DD214 stating that you were honorably discharged.  There are other forms that are acceptable if you do not have your DD214.  Please call us and we can help you determine what else can be used.  You will need to start at the Town Clerk’s Office and pay your town fee. You would then pay your State fee at one of the substations (DMV).

TRAILERS

Trailers are registered just like motor vehicles.  If the GVW of the trailer is over 3000 pounds it does require a title.  If the GVW is less than 3000 pounds you will need a bill of sale, and either a copy of the previous registration, or we have a Vin Verification form that needs to be filled out.  This needs to be completed by a NH Police Officer, NH Licensed Auto Dealer, or a NH Inspection Station.  The State requires something other than the handwritten VIN #.

For more information on Motor Vehicle Registration please see the Department of Safety website.

BOATS

The Town Clerks office now does boat registrations.
The person who name is on the registration must be present to sign the registration.
Any boat with a motor needs to be registered.  Sailboats 12 feet and over must be registered
When registering a new boat you must present one of the following:

  • Certificate of Origin

You will also need to know the length of the boat, horsepower, single or twin engine, inboard or outboard motor, and the manufacturer of the boat.

If you have any questions please feel free to call.

OHRV REGISTRATION
